Our History

Exolon Group – A Story of Innovation, Transformation and Tradition

Exolon Group History

The Exolon Group has a long and successful history – shaped by technological progress, international growth and continuous transformation. What began as a joint venture has evolved into a leading European manufacturer of polycarbonate and polyester sheet solutions for industry, construction and visual communication.

Milestones:

2000:

Foundation of the Sheet Europe Business

The European multiwall and solid sheet business was founded as a joint venture between Bayer AG and Röhm GmbH under the brand Makroform. Axxis (Belgium) and Carbolux (Italy), both originally established in the 1980s, formed a strong partnership, laying the groundwork for today’s Exolon Group.

2003:

Bayer Sheet Europe

In 2003, the company was renamed Bayer Sheet Europe. It became a wholly owned subsidiary of Bayer MaterialScience in Leverkusen – a milestone in consolidating production expertise and technological excellence.

2015:

In September, the plastics division (Bayer MaterialScience) was carved out to form the independent Covestro Group – a key step in strengthening market focus and agility.

2019:

Acquisition by Serafin Group

In September 2019, the European sheet business was acquired by the Serafin Group, marking a new chapter of entrepreneurial independence and growth.

2020:

The Start of Exolon Group

Since January 2020, the Exolon Group has operated as an independent company. With production sites in Tielt (Belgium) for solid sheets and Nera Montoro (Italy) for multiwall sheets and panels, the company embodies quality, innovation and sustainability in plastics manufacturing.

2025:

Expansion Through the AkyVer® Acquisition

Exolon Group expanded its product portfolio through the acquisition and integration of the AkyVer® polycarbonate product line from Corplex, Kaysersberg, France. This strategic move strengthens the position of the Exolon Group as a trusted partner for lightweight, durable and high-performance sheet solutions across Europe.

From Strong Roots to Independent Strength

The journey of the Exolon Group is one of evolution and entrepreneurial vision – from its origins within global corporations to a strong, independent brand. Rooted in decades of material expertise, the Exolon Group stands today for high-performance polyester and polycarbonate sheet solutions that combine innovation, quality and functionality – serving customers in industry, construction and visual communication worldwide.

People. Passion. Performance.

Despite all the changes over the years, Exolon Group and its long-standing employees have never lost their passion for the product. True to its slogan “People. Passion. Performance.”, the company combines strong customer relationships with a genuine human touch. This spirit is reflected in clear communication, strong commitment and the flexibility to respond quickly to customers’ needs – every single day.
